4 Basics for Better Speaking

If you ever get discouraged in making a presentation, go back to these 4 basics for better speaking:

1. Tone of Voice: Vary your pace by speeding up, slowing down, pausing, and repeating. Create variety by using highs and lows in your voice to hold your audience’s attention. Create emphasis by making words or phrases stand out by noticeably altering the volume of your voice softer or louder at the important points. Remember to project by adjusting the volume of your voice for your audience and the room you are speaking in.

2. Gestures: Use your hands, face, and entire body to illustrate and emphasize your points. Also, maintaining good posture will help you maintain your confidence.

3. Eye Contact: Show your belief and confidence in any speech by maintaining eye contact with your audience. You do not have to have your speech memorized, but you can achieve better eye contact by memorizing important parts.

4. Confidence: Project confidence by preparing well and by rehearsing. Practice in front of a video camera so that you can your gestures and  your facial expressions played back. The more you practice, the more confidence that you will feel when giving a speech.
